Many of the most popular computer games have been written for Microsoft Windows operations systems and are sometimes difficult to run on Linux. The primary method to run Windows software on Linux is through the compatibility layer Wine. However, advanced games often require tweaks and optimizations to meet the demands of hardcore gamers.
